This is the third chapter of a novel which I am publishing here in serialized form. Chapters 1 and 2 are available to all readers, but access to all following chapters require a paid subscription.
Over the course of the week that followed, Rayna wondered at times if she ought to call Chad up and beg his forgiveness. At one point she actually felt resolved to ask him to give her another chance. Surely they could work things out; what was a bit of distance, after all? Certainly they could visit one another on weekends, taking turns playing host, thus enabling each to show off the other to all of his or her newfound college mates. Her girlfriends would swoon and be overwhelmed with jealousy when they saw the comely beau who held her hand and smiled upon her with such beatific joy, like a man truly blessed; similarly, his frat boy buddies would elbow each other's ribs with voracious delight when she showed up in her little black dress, only to grow astonished when she rushed into his-- this lowly freshman pledge's-- welcoming arms. Oh, it would be perfect, perfect!
